There's nothing more frustrating than spending an hour on your curly hair routine and having it come out completely different than last time — same products, same person, totally different result. Our writer Zaneera looked into why this happens so often, and it comes down to three things.
1. Not enough research on your actual hair
It's easy to buy whatever an influencer swears by, but that product was formulated with someone else's hair in mind. If you have low-porosity hair, for example, you generally want lighter products — think flaxseed or glycerin-based formulas — rather than heavy creams and butters that just sit on top of your strands without absorbing. The more you actually understand your own hair's porosity and needs, the faster you can rule products in or out instead of buying and hoping.
2. Inconsistent technique
Finger coils, brush styling, scrunching — every technique gives a different result, and switching between them without noticing is a common reason results feel random. The size of your sections matters too: smaller sections generally give more definition, and where you place your parting changes where you get volume. If your routine feels inconsistent, it might not be the products at all — it might be that your technique is changing wash to wash without you realizing it.
3. Rushing the process
It's tempting to move fast, especially on a long wash day — but a rushed wash-and-go and a proper, defined curly routine take genuinely different amounts of time and attention. Bigger sections and less-deliberate product application save you minutes now and cost you definition later.
Where this fits into a real system
All three of these get a lot easier once the foundation underneath them is solid. That's what detox, remedy, and nourish are for — clean, treated, moisturized hair responds far more predictably to technique than hair that's still dealing with buildup or dryness underneath. Get the essentials right first, and the styling technique stops fighting you.
