I get asked constantly whether a growth plateau and breakage are the same thing. They can look identical from the outside — your length just isn't moving — but understanding which one you're actually dealing with changes what you should do next.
What a growth plateau actually is
A true plateau is rare. Nearly everyone's scalp keeps producing new hair at a fairly steady rate. What people call a "plateau" is almost always breakage keeping pace with growth — your hair is growing in at the root while breaking off at the ends at close to the same speed, so the length in the mirror never changes.
How to tell which one you're dealing with
Look at your ends, not just your length. Thin, wispy, see-through ends are a strong sign of breakage. Notice how much hair collects in your brush, your shower drain, or your detangling sessions — an unusual amount is breakage talking. And think about your routine honestly: frequent heat styling, tight styles worn constantly, rough detangling, or skipped trims are all breakage-generating habits, not growth-blocking ones.
Why the fix has to happen in order
This is where I see people waste the most money — reaching for a growth product the moment length stalls, when the actual problem is retention, not production. A growth oil on top of hair that's still breaking is a bit like adding water to a bucket with a hole in it. It might help briefly, but it can't outpace the loss.
